Every first Friday of the month, Cape celebrates the arts by putting on special events and staying open past regular hours! There are multiple events happening and many forms of art on display!

Art

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will be unveiling their new monthly exhibit, featuring oil paintings by Lesley Eby, works inspired by Pablo Picasso, and more! The opening reception will be from 5pm to 8pm.

Music

Jason Heeter & Ghost Signals will be performing at Ebb & Flow Fermentations from 7pm to 10pm.

The Southeast Missouri State Marching Band presents an evening of jazz by the Southeast Missouri Regional Jazz Orchestra. Founded in 2000 and comprising of area music educators, professional musicians, and talented high school and college students. This orchestra performs throughout the region and are thrilled to be performing this concert to support the Southeast Marching Band. All proceeds will help send the Southeast Marching Band to the Band America Super Regionals in Indianapolis, IN.

Friday 8/4: Meet K-9 Agent Tex - Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center

Corporal Alan Lamb and K-9 Tex are one of nine K-9/handler teams within the Missouri Department of Conservation. They're tasked with enforcing laws related to conservation and public safety, assisting with search and rescue operations, and of course meeting Missouri's citizens. This is your opportunity to learn more about K-9 Tex, his amazing abilities, and how he and Cpl. Lamb protect our fish, forests, and wildlife.

Saturday 8/5: Army Corps of Engineers Motor Vessel Mississippi Open House

The Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District will host an open house of Motor Vessel MISSISSIPPI on August 5. The vessel is the largest diesel towboat on the Mississippi River. The open house will provide information about the importance of the Mississippi River System and the diversity of uses and users along the waterway.

Saturday 8/5: Cape Catfish vs Alton River Dragons

Come watch the Catfish play their final game of the season! It will feature music, drink specials, Catfish gear discounts and more. The Cape Catfish are a part of the Prospect League, a league of collegiate baseball players created to bring family-friendly and affordable baseball to communities in the midwest. You can buy tickets here or at the park.

Tuesday 8/8: Here. Literary Magazine Launch Party - Arts Council of Southeast Missouri

Come celebrate the release of Issue 03 of Here. Literary Magazine, the magazine where high school students from Southeast Missouri publish their writing and artwork! Attendees at the launch party will be the first to see the published issue. Young writers will read their work that is published in the magazine, and the artists' art that is published in the magazine will be on display in the gallery. Hors d'oeuvres will also be served. The event is FREE but you have to grab a ticket here!

Saturday 8/12: Little Acorns: Something Fishy - Cape Nature Center

Little Acorns programs are designed to help children ages 3-6 learn about the natural world through hands on experiences, crafts, and focused free-play activities. Missouri is home to over 200 species of fish! The Cape Nature Center will explore the special features of these slimy swimmers, learn how to identify some, and discover how they survive in their aquatic habitats.

Join CCSOMO from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm, Saturday, August 12, 2023, in Cape Girardeau on the banks of the mighty Mississippi for a day filled with activities for the whole family. Enjoy the Knights’ famous barbecue, fare from local food trucks, adult beverages, inflatables for the kids, live entertainment, games, and more. While Mississippi Mingle is an event full of fun, it is also an opportunity to support your local community through the programs of CCSOMO. Proceeds from Mississippi Mingle will help change the lives of the most vulnerable among us right here in southern Missouri.

Wednesday 8/16: Cape G Rocks Historic Porch Session at the Red House

Cape G Rocks Historic Porch Sessions returns on August 16 at The Red House Interpretive Center in Cape Girardeau. The concert will feature blues/soul musicians Ivas John and Jeremy Short.
This innovative concert series supports culturally significant historic homes and area musicians. Attendees are encouraged to bring snacks and drinks, as well as lawn chairs or blankets.

Saturday 8/19: Stay Craftinated! - Arts Council of Southeast Missouri

This FREE program encourages kids to create! Director Kelly Downes will be helping students create "Spiritual Graffiti" during August’s program. She will teach them the impact of positive words through all forms of literacy. Stay Craftinated! is FREE for kids of all ages! Parents are welcomed in our Visual Arts Cooperative Gallery where they can relax and enjoy free coffee.

Saturday 8/19: Free Skin Cancer Screening

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U. S. and worldwide. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70, but when detected early, many skin cancers can be cured. The free skin cancer screening will be held on Saturday, August 19, from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Southeast Cancer Center in Cape Girardeau. Space is limited and registration is required.

The Safe House of Southeast Missouri will host a grand opening of its new Outreach Office and Thrift Shop location on August 25.
The grand opening will feature a ribbon cutting followed by an open house, facility tours, giveaways, and raffles. Food trucks will be onsite, as well.
