All Month: Community Origami Folding - Cape Girardeau Public Library

Be part of our collaborative origami display by picking up some origami paper at the Information Desk and folding an origami creature. Submit your completed origami creations to the Information Desk to be added to the display in July! (Please note: Origami creations submitted for display will not be returned.)

Thursday 6/1 - Sunday 6/4: Cape Girardeau Spring Fair Day - West Park Mall

June 1st-4th, 2023 come on over to West Park Mall located at 3049 William Street and enjoy rides, games, and food! Thursday and Friday the fair will open at 5pm, and Saturday and Sunday the fair will open at 12pm. Wristbands are available.

Friday 6/2: Bike to Work and School Day

Meet at the Arena Park tennis courts for breakfast, biking tips, safety tips and fun before you ride to work or school!

Friday 6/2: First Friday

Every first Friday of the month, Cape celebrates the arts by putting on special events and staying open past regular hours! There are multiple events happening and many forms of art on display!

Art

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is hosting a very special exhibit this First Friday. The exhibit is entitled "I'm So Local... I'm Already Here". Multiple iconic Cape Girardeau businesses are being honored through art by regional artists. The second gallery features art by the late Dr. Sam Bishop, former SEMO Art History professor. The opening reception begins at 6pm on June 2nd, and the exhibits will be open all month. For more information, click here!

The Crisp Museum is hosting a quilting themed exhibit which showcases practical quilts, artistic landscapes, and even some history and vintage machines. The exhibit is part of the "Quilt Extravaganza" which is a month-long event hosted by the Crisp Museum. There is more info about the Quilt Extravaganza later in this blog.

Music

Tunes At Twilight: Every Summer, Old Town Cape hosts an evening of music at Ivers Square every Friday! Enjoy a free concert of premiere local music outside while watching the sun set! Bring a lawn chair or a towel! There will be music not only on First Friday, but on the 9th and 16th as well! Click here for the schedule and more information!

Other

Yoga East Healing Arts Studio will be doing a free yoga session to celebrate the arts from 5-6pm! Register Here!

The Cape Area Chamber of Commerce will have their First Friday Coffee from 7:30am - 8:30am at the Century Casino Event Center. Doors open at 7am. The topic of discussion is "Legislative Updates". Register Here!

6/2 - 6/25: Quilt Extravaganza

Quilt Extravaganza is a month-long exhibit complemented with stitching, workshops, and a demonstration. The exhibit has a wide range of artistic and practical quilts, as well as vintage quilts and sewing machines.

Events

Every Friday: Stitch at Crisp. 9am - 4pm. Social time with other like-minded creators.
June 3 and 4, 1pm - 4pm: Make a hand sewn Quilted Bowl Cozie. Supplies provided, no sewing experience required. $5. Register Here!

June 10 and 11, 1-4pm: Quilted Casserole Tote. BYO Machine and Supplies. Ages 16+ and sewing experience required. $5. Register Here!

June 17-18: Place Mat with Pockets. BYO Machine and Supplies. Ages 16+ and sewing expiereince nessecary. $5. Register Here!

June 24, 1-4pm: T-Shirt Quilt Demonstration. Free and open to the public.

A closing reception will be held from 1-4 p.m. on June 25 with a Bed Turning beginning at 3 p.m. A bed turning consists of having quilts stacked on a bed. Then, they are lifted one by one and information that is known is given, such as its maker, when it was made, the fabrics, patterns used, the story of it changing hands and even heartwarming tales. It truly is a Quilt Extravaganza!

Friday 6/2: Nature Center Night: Family Fishing

Summer is growing near, it’s time to get outside and enjoy nature! Come join us at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center for an afternoon of fishing for the whole family. Rods and bait will be provided as well as instructions, so no experience is required. Visitors of all ages are welcome. This program is part of our “Nature Center at Night” series and the building and exhibits will remain open during the program. Located: Cape Girardeau Nature Center

Join us for a casual adult coloring session where we provide the pages, colored pencils, and a fun atmosphere to color and socialize. This month, we are coloring positive words and phrases.

Every Wednesday All Month: Cape Girardeau's Municipal Band

Come watch Cape's historic Municipal Band play this season, beginning on June 7th! Performing for over 100 years, they will be bringing marches and other classical band tunes from the newly renovated Capaha Park! Bring a lawn chair or a towel!

Saturday 6/10: Archery Basics - Cape Girardeau Nature Center

Be right on target! Try your hand at archery and experience a fun way to enjoy the outdoors. All archery equipment will be provided. Adult supervision is required for ages 9-17. This program will take place entirely outdoors so please dress for the weather.

Saturday 6/10: Music for Mac 2023

Ebb and Flow Fermentations is hosting a day of music to support Mac's Mission, a foundation that supports animals with special needs. There will be music from 11am - 11pm, a raffle with all proceeds going to Mac's Mission, and a portion of all food and drink sales will be donated to the cause!

The Southeast Missouri Modelers Association (SEMMA) invites the public to come fly radio-controlled model aircraft, or just watch. Free hot dogs and soda will be served at 11:30 a.m.

Join KRCU for their first KRCU After Hours! They will be at EVTV Motor Verks in downtown Cape Girardeau (601 Morgan Oak Street) to learn about electric vehicle technology and solar power and enjoy frozen margaritas from blenders powered by electric batteries.

Check out the weekend-long Hot Air Balloon Festival in Sikeston! Ride in Hot Air Balloons, partake in food and craft vendors, music and petting zoos, oh my! A pass is $10 a vehicle and is good all weekend.

Saturday 6/17: Juneteenth Celebration

Come on out to Ivers Square on June 17th, 2023 at 12pm and celebrate Juneteenth with your community! For those that don’t know, Juneteenth is a day that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. This took place on June 19, 1865, the date in which enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received the news they were free. There will be artisanal craft vendors, social service organizations, food vendors, door prizes, and a kids area coordinated by Discovery Playhouse! And lastly, at 1pm our entertainment begins! In addition to renown poet, Ebony Stewart performing, there will also be music by Ivas John, Cat Daddy'o, and Phunk Dat.

Saturday 6/17: Fishing Lessons (Part 1) - Cape Girardeau Nature Center

Fishing is a great way for kids and families to have fun outdoors, learn about conservation, and make happy memories. Our Discover Nature-Fishing program is a hands-on, four-part fishing instruction series that helps families gain the skills and confidence they need to go fishing on their own. The Discover Nature-Fishing program is available for ages 7 to 15.
