  1. The Hutson’s window display. No Cape Girardeau Christmas is complete without taking a stroll downtown and checking out the window display at Hutson’s Big Sandy Superstore.
  2. Holiday of Lights Display. Every year, many businesses, organizations and individuals set up light displays at Cape County Park North. Grab a hot chocolate. Pile in the vehicle, turn on Christmas music and soak in the thousands and thousands of lights. The display is open to the public free of charge.
  3. Jeff’s Christmas Lights. When talented people go Christmas overboard, the results just light us up. You can find this display at 1858 Evondale Drive. Jeff collects donations he gives to the Southeast Missouri Food Bank and The People’s Shelter. 
  4. Oak Hills Lights. Snow or no snow, the folks at Oak Hills Lights create a winter wonderland. The lights and music might just rival the good tidings and joy of the first Christmas. If your season isn’t yet merry and bright, head to 1606 Oak Hills Drive.
  5. Cape Girardeau County History Center. The museum in Uptown Jackson always puts on festive displays at Christmastime. This year the displays include Christmas trees that tell a story—in addition to a nativity scene collection, the museum also displays trees that give tribute to the military and celebrate the 50th birthday of Disney World.
  6. Southeast Missourian Christmas basketball tournament. The annual tournament kicks off at 9 a.m. on December 26 and runs four days through the championship game at 7:30 p.m. on December 29. The hometown team, Cape Girardeau Central, is the top seed and favored to win.
  7. Burn off some of those cookie calories. The SEMO Indoor Rec Center pool is welcoming the public during the holiday break. Call ahead for current hours (573) 651-2105
  8. And a Partridge in a … Bird Feeder? At 2 pm on December 21, the Cape Girardeau Nature Center will teach you how to build a bird feeder out of a glass soda bottle. Snow is in the forecast, and the birds need your help!
  1. Want to start your 2023 fit goals a little early? Run the EPIC Glow 5K or one-mile fun run on New Year’s Eve. Entry cost is $25. The race starts at the Osage Centre at 6 pm. The event is a fund-raiser for EPIC, or Every Person Impacts Community, a nonprofit aimed at helping youth make good choices.
  2. In the spirit. The Glenn House, one of Cape Girardeau’s most historic buildings, will connect you with the Ghost of Christmas past, along with cocktails, beginning at 6:30 pm December 27.
